Jalini on stage at Mandala

Jalini on stage at Mandala

Sep 16, 2018-
Actor Dayahang Rai’s new theatre directorial, Jalini, which is a dramatisation of a folktale written by Dhruba Satya Pariyar, has started its staging at Mandala Theatre from Friday.
Jalini, included in Pariyar’s short story anthology Kairan, is set in prehistoric times and, like every good folktale, revolves around issues that are pertinent even today. The story, according to author Pariyar, is an attempt to seek answers to questions such as the condition of women in that period, how several superstitious beliefs popular to this day were first formulated and came into practice, and how those beliefs managed to continued till today, among other things. “If there’s one thing the story aspires to do it’s explore the effect of those superstitious beliefs in modern times,” Pariyar has said, “The function of a story is to conjure certain images in the reader’s mind while a play stages those images right in front of us. I am grateful to the theatre artists for choosing to dramatise this particular story.”
Director Rai said that he was inspired by all the stories in Kairan and since the first time he read it, the images began to appear in front of his eyes. “I thought Jalini would lend itself easily to dramatization. I approached the author and asked a favour to write the script as well and he happily did it,” Rai said.
The play features actors Srijana Subba, Bijaya Baral, Binita Gurung, Ingihopo Koinch Sunuwar, Pushkar Karki, and Sagar Dahal, among others.
Jalini will be staged at Mandala Theatre every day at 5:30 pm until October 7.
