Since its debut at this year's Sundance Film Festival, Mandy has been sold as what looks like Taken if it was told through the style of an 80's Dungeons and Dragons campaign, with artwork by Frank Frazetta. To a certain extent, the film does indeed embody that ethos, as its visually stunning, deliberately paced story does linger on those last two influences, with the former only really kicking in towards the end of the film. So while Mandy isn't exactly the Nic Cage revenge flick it's making itself out to be, it's certainly a unique and entertaining dive into the trippy and the brutal.
Red (Nicolas Cage) and Mandy (Andrea Riseborough) live an idyllic existence in the Pacific Northwest, or as idyllic as 1983 can allow. That soon ends after an enigmatic cult leader (Linus Roache) requests Mandy be brought to him, by any means necessary. If only he'd known the chain of events that would ensue after his impulsive decision had been reached, because it doesn't take long for Red to get some vengeful ideas in his head -- and the tools to carry them out.
Mandy is by no means a fast-paced film, rather it's a more atmospheric experience that plays with visual convention rather than with narration. In fact, storywise, this film is as simple as they come. A wrong is committed, and the righteous hero kills his way to the top, in the name of vengeance and closure. That's not meant to be dismissive, as co-writer / director Panos Cosmatos infuses his second film with an enthralling energy that can keep the viewer's attention through the first two thirds, so long as they are patient to get to the closing act that sees Cage's protagonist Red go full on Rambo against his enemies.
It's equally easy to root for his quest, as Linus Roache's Sand Jeremiah is both compelling and absolutely disgusting to watch in his quest for the heart of Andrea Riseborough's Mandy. The character, a failed 70's music star who found LSD and a higher calling, is unlike anything we've seen Roache play, and his interplay with Riseborough during the second act more than makes up for Cage's temporary disappearance from Mandy. If anything, there's enough material between these two leads to have written Nicolas Cage out of the film completely, but not enough for the final confrontation between Red and Jeremiah to be truly satisfying.
With that stipulation, when Cage rejoins Mandy, the vengeance angle still totally works after the groundwork set by our observations of Red and Mandy's relationship, as well as how Mandy carries herself when in Jeremiah's clutches. Rather than making her a standard damsel in distress, she's a skittish and sensitive, but still very much a cognizant party in the whole affair. So when Red's heart aches for her absence, we can still get behind his wanting to avenge her, even if our hearts aren't totally with the cause.
The slow, methodical crawl of Mandy is punctuated by violence when needed, setting up a final half hour or so of heavy metal combat that closes the film like a shot of adrenaline to the chest. There's no wire-fu or jump kicks to be seen, rather hard fought battles with blunt and/or sharp instruments, brute force, and some nails thrown in for flavor. And despite the story's shortcomings, the shift totally works, as Cosmatos has had us sitting in the right sort of atmospheric stew to prime us for what was eventually going to happen.
Mandy could have done a little better with what it had as a movie, but it cannot be written off as a bad time. The audience is encouraged to get lost and take the trip, which ultimately leads to a colorful nightmare trading in death, revenge, and true love. Think of the film as a sensory deprivation tank, allowing you to cut yourself off from the outside world, if only for a little while. One final note: after seeing Mandy, someone needs to hand Joe Mangiello a copy of the film, as well as Panos Cosmatos' phone number. If that pair doesn't work together on some sort of collaboration for Death Saves, then that's just karmic money being left on the table.
One of the best parts about visiting Walt Disney World is that it's never the same trip twice. There's always something new happening as a way to entice guests to make the regular pilgrimage to Orlando in order to experience the four theme parks again and again.
While many people are probably considering holding off on visiting Walt Disney World until Star Wars Galaxy's Edge opens in the late-fall of 2019, there are plenty of great reasons not to wait, and Disney Parks recently announced a number of limited time events that might make you consider making the trip sooner rather than later.

The girls in Pataakha take some getting used to: you have to suspend disbelief to take these dusty, filthy-mouthed sisters seriously. But once they start settling into their roles, you cross a hump
Both Radhika Madan, who is quite a sparkler again in her upcoming Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota, and Sanya Malhotra, have their moments.
Pataakha movie cast: Vijay Raaz, Sanya Malhotra, Radhika Madan, Namit Das, Saanand Varma, Abhishek Duhan Pataakha movie director: Vishal Bhardwaj Pataakha movie ratings: 3 stars
Somewhere in rural Rajasthan, two sisters are born fighting, and they keep fighting. With everything they’ve got: imaginative ‘gaalis’, fists, kicks, wrestler-style moves. Their fights are the stuff of village ‘tamasha’, with people gathering and cheering, as the two beat, punch and fling each other to the ground, and have to be pulled apart, mostly by their hapless father.
It took me a while to fully get into the film. Why do these sisters look as if they do not bathe for days on end? Their matted hair and unwashed faces distracted me, as did their thick accents which feel faux in the beginning, making their rat-a-tat-tat dialogues quite incomprehensible in places. Why are they fighting in the first place?
But soon enough, it is clear that everything is working to a design. Vishal Bhardwaj’s Pataakha, based on Charan Singh Pathik’s short story Do Behnein, has managed to pull off a rousing parable.
Bharadwaj, who has also written the film, doesn’t waste a second in centre-staging the two sisters Badki Champa (Madan) and Chutki Genda (Malhotra) and their animosity, which simmers all the time, bursting into flames whenever things spiral out of control, with a little nudge from the sisters. And there’s nothing that their loving father Bapu (Raaz) nor the respective men in their lives (Duhan and Das) can do which will change things.
This is a wonderful ensemble cast. The village rich guy (Verma), festooned with gold chains, who lusts after the two feuding sisters; the Naarad Muni type ‘family friend’ called Dipper (Grover); the googly-eyed ‘vaid’, the wise old ‘daadi’; the two who play the lovers-cum-spouses of the two sisters; Raaz, pitch–perfect as the father, all work in tandem.
Bharadwaj’s touch with names is in evidence here too. One of my all-time favourites, Billo Chaman Bahaar, from Omkara, is almost trumped here by Dipper, called thus because he has a lazy eye, which keeps ‘dipping’. And in the way Genda is called ‘Marigold’ by her besotted lover.
The girls take some getting used to: you have to suspend disbelief to take these dusty, filthy-mouthed sisters seriously. But once they start settling into their roles, you cross a hump, and then you swing, as they do, from one fight to another, as they cross from their parental home to their marital ‘aangan’, and discover, to their horror, that they are together again. Both Madan, who is quite a sparkler again in her upcoming Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota, and Malhotra, have their moments, even if they make you want to reach out and wipe the grime off their faces, and tell them to calm down, enough already.
This film reminded me a little of Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola. Clearly, Bharadwaj has a thing for cows. Matru had a hallucinatory pink one; here there are your regular ‘desi’ ones, which Badki loves. But unlike Matru, Pataakha doesn’t lose sight of its suitably nutty comic tone (there’s a nice sly dig about ‘swacch Bharat’). Who doesn’t know that homes can be the most vicious battle-grounds?
I’ve always maintained that Bharadwaj is great with set-up and dwindles as a finisher. Happy to be proved wrong this time around. Pataakha’s ending is a cracker. Why do Badki and Chutki fight? The no answer is the answer which powers this parable, which keeps referring in a fairly simplistic one-track manner to India and Pakistan whenever Badki and Chukti are at each other’s throats. Like the two sisters, why do the countries fight? Why did they start in the first place? Why can’t they ‘do jhappi’ and forgive each other their real and imagined sins and live happily ever after? Bharadwaj’s placing Israel-Palestine, and North and South Korea in the same forgive-and-forget category is a huge stretch, but what are movies for if not for wishful thinking?
The First song of Nepali Movie PRASAD, titled ‘Lai Lai…’ has been released via Youtube. The song is accompanied by a lyrical video, with stills from the movie. Namrata Shrestha and Bipin Karki starrer movie tells the story about ‘how a couple struggling to conceive a child maintain love and mutual understanding?’
“At the heart of Prasad is an inter-caste marriage in which I have portrayed the role of the husband belonging to a lower caste. My approach while portraying this role, as in my previous movie, is the same,” actor Karki said, “I have tried to give the character some real-life resonances so that the audience can relate and empathies with him. In any project, be it in the past or now, my approach remains the same, which many have said goes against the grain of what a ‘hero’ in a Nepali movie should be.”
The movie also features director Nischal Basnet make a comeback as an actor. “I felt like I really ‘acted’ this time. Maybe it’s because of my own maturity as an actor, but more than that, it’s because of the director,” Basnet has said. He also mentioned that because the story delves into psychological conflicts between its characters, the shooting entailed plenty of retakes once even 34 outtakes before a shot was finalized.
Director Dinesh Raut, whose previous directorial include romance dramas such as Classic and November Rain, said that the song more or less captures the essence of the movie. Scriptwriter Sushil Paudel said that his debut is an attempt at “course correction of an industry where stories are often poor and aren’t portrayed creatively.”
In the song and the stills that go with it, Karki is seen as a married tailor while Basnet looks like the one that comes in between the couple’s relationship.
